Co-curricular or extra-curricular activities?

Co-curricular activities or extra-curricular activities? Yes, to both, actually!

It is heartening to see how over time, educators, parents and students are replacing the word extra-curricular with co-curricular. The prefix 'co' means 'together' or 'joint.'

You must be thinking, aren't they both the same…, and yes, they indeed are.

Over the years, we have replaced the word extra-curricular with co-curricular. Some popular co-curricular activities include performing arts, including theatre, dance, music, sports, and drawing.

The way we address a particular thing, activity or instance often determines our feelings and approach towards it. The prefix 'CO' reminds us of words like 'coexist and collaborate. The prefix 'CO' means 'together' or 'joint'. It is very important in a child's learning journey that different forms of arts and sports are joined 'CO'hesively to accentuate the child's experiences, thereby ensuring holistic growth.

These co-curricular activities, along with skill development, also ensure that students acquire the following:

•        Critical thinking

•        Creative thinking

•        Resilience

•        Creative problem-solving

•        Visionary leadership

•        Emotional skills

•        Self-directed, engaged learning

•        Art of expression and communication

•        Team Building

•        Inter and Intrapersonal skills

At NWS, we regard both academics and co-curricular activities as imperative to the students' growth journey. We foster an environment to help the students naturally gravitate towards their interests. Ensuring that every child is given the necessary support and impetus right from the beginning through our art clubs and creative initiatives like CREO that propel our students to follow their passion and become the well-rounded leaders of tomorrow.

Co-curricular activities help children learn about the world around them as they get the perfect outlet to invest their energy, creativity and curiosity. They brace not only students but us adults with 'CO'untless life skills.

So next time you feel like tapping your feet or painting the canvas red….just go ahead and do it!
